Museo Diocesano “San Matteo”
The San Matteo Diocesan Museum (Museo Diocesano San Matteo) is housed in an old former archepiscopal seminary. The building was once the premises of the Salerno medical school and is an important centre for learning about history and culture in Campania from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The museum contains a precious collection of ivory tablets, a collection of sixteenth century works with the innovative features of Renaissance art, exemplified by the large number of paintings by Andrea Sabatini. The seventeenth century collection consists almost exclusively of works by Neapolitan artists. The museum also has a collection coins from Magna Graecia, republican and imperial Rome and the Mint of Salerno.
