Complesso Museale Santa Maria Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco

Situated along the decumanus maximus of Naples, the Complex of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco is one of the world’s rare examples of buildings dedicated to the cult of Purgatory. The complex includes a hypogeum, a museum (Museo dell’Opera), the archive and the church of ‘e cape e morte’ (skulls of the dead), the name given to it by local inhabitants. The museum collection includes liturgical objects dating from the 16th to the 19th century, books, vestments and several 17th century Neapolitan paintings.
