Cimitero delle Fontanelle

The Fontanelle cemetery is a former charnel house with a surface area of over 3000 sq. m. Situated in the Sanità district of Naples, the cemetery owes its name to the numerous springs along the surface. The entrance to the cemetery is through the hollow of the small church of Maria Santissima del Carmine The site is renowned for the cult of the anime pezzentelle (the poor forgotten souls) which involved adopting and looking after the skull of an abandoned soul in exchange for protection.
