Site temporarily closed to the public Città della Scienza is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century factory, and extends over an area of twelve thousand square meters, in a seafront location between Posillipo and Nisida. It provides visitors with an interactive experience amid various wonders of science and technology: games, interactive and multimedia exhibitions, videos, displays, and scientific and technological curiosities. The history of scientific research and its dissemination features heavily at the Science Centre, which is Italy’s first hands-on interactive science museum. It is part of the tradition of science museums initiated in 1969 by the Exploratorium in San Francisco, whose main aim is to provide the public, especially young people, and ‘non-experts’, with opportunities to engage with science and technology, to stimulate their desire to understand scientific phenomena using an innovative methodology. Visitors, old and young alike, are called on to experiment directly with the scientific phenomena found in nature and in daily life: there are no objects to be looked at but not touched, instead there are experiences to be had. The Palestra della Scienza, or Science Gym, commemorates the successes of recent years that have allowed progress to be made in the field of communication. For centuries, starting with Galileo and Newton, systems and theories have produced a wealth of scientific certainties which for a long time have been used to explain the relationships of cause and effect of natural phenomena and their evolutions, and to carry out any type of technical or engineering project. By means of a series of interactive experiments, observation of phenomena, and perceptive illusions, the Palestra della Scienza acts as a sort of Ariadne’s thread, guiding visitors to discover the laws of nature and the complexity of natural systems. The Planetarium, which is one of the most innovative in Italy, is among the Science Centre’s most spectacular and popular attractions. It allows visitors to discover the stars, planets and galaxies. It can seat 64 people and is equipped with an optical and a digital system.
Its ‘sky simulator’ projects multiple lights onto the domed ceiling, faithfully recreating the constellations, everything that is visible to the naked eye and the movements of the celestial vault. The planetarium was updated to unite the best of the effects of the new technologies offered by Digistar 3 with the reproduction of the celestial vault using the Zeiss optical projector, thus combining scientific-education value with a spectacular experience. Finally, Bit, the Città della Scienza’s virtual cartoon mascot, accompanies children aged 0 – 9 into the Officina dei Piccoli, one of the most important children’s museums in Italy, which was built with the accent on technology.
