Tempio di Serapide
A unique phlegraean vulcanic phenomenon has risen and lowered this majestic building through the centuries, carrying the huge columns under and over the water level. The large edifice is one the major examples of a macellum, or food marketplace, built between the end of the first and the beginning of the second century A.C. The building presents a square plan, with a central court surrounded on all sides by porticoes, paved with marble and closed in by 30 granite columns. The stalls were set up around the courtyard, following the typical pattern in Roman time. There must have been a second floor as well, as there is a staircase in the southern corner.
