The fourteenth-century Cappella Palatina houses objects, church ornaments and paintings by Caracciolo, Solimena and Giordano, alongside modern artworks. The interior has a single nave and was frescoed in its entirety in the fourteenth century with stories of the Old and the New Testament?by Giotto and his pupils: only a few fragments of this cycle survive. On the right-hand wall of the nave, frescoes by the Florentine artist Niccolò di Tommaso; inside, sculptures of the Neapolitan Renaissance. On the back wall of the sacristy two versions of the Madonna and Child by F. Laurana (‘400). The first floor contains works primarily painted for religious commissioners (fifteenth-eighteenth century), originating from churches and institutions that were abolished, (Crucifixion by B. Caracciolo; Miracle of Saint John of God by Solimena). The second floor houses works dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, including a valuable Neapolitan painting collection from the 1800s, hung according to subject.
