The current exhibition comprises three important groups: the first consists of 41 paintings, including a large number of sketches, by Francesco De Mura, which he himself bequeathed to the Monte in 1783; the second is a group of 31 canvases from the patrimony of Maria Sofia Capece Galeota dei Duchi della Regina, donated by Barone Giuseppe Carelli: among these mention should be made of the Self-Portrait by Luca Giordano, large equestrian portraits, the Holy Family with Saint Lucy by Santafede, and the Pietà by Andrea Vaccaro; the last group contains either paintings for the Church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia personally commissioned from various artists, or paintings that have reached the Pio Monte by other means over the past few hundred years. Caravaggio was commissioned by the Pio Monte to make the painting The Seven Works of Mercy for the church; the original contract.
