The museum highlights two themes that are important to Christian belief: the portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the portrayal of San Gennaro, patron saint of Naples and of Campania, martyr and witness to the faith. The theme of martyrdom is expressed in works by Giovan Bernardo Lama, Fabrizio Santafede and Pietro Torres, while paintings inspired by the Marian theme can boast artists such as Teodoro D’Errico, Francesco Solimena, Aniello Falcone, Andrea Vaccaro and Marco Pino.
The Museum houses works of great merit, including the ‘Immaculate Conception’ by Charles Mellin of Lorraine, of 1646; ‘Saint Francis receiving the symbols of the priesthood’, a rare iconography painted by Solimena; and the tender ‘Madonna Child’ by Massimo Stanzione.
