Museo Diocesano di Napoli
The Diocesan Museum of Naples, a container of memories as well as a tool of pastoral communication of the Christian message, opens inside the church of Donnaregina Nuova which had been closed for many years. It housed works of great value like the 1646 work “Immacolata Concezione” of the artist Charles Mellin; the San Francesco that receives the symbols of his priestly order, a rare image of Solimena; as well as the tender Madonna with Child by Massimo Stanzione. Next to the many and beautiful works owned by the ex-monastic church, the first museum itinerary shows works of art put together to illustrate two important themes of Christian faith that lives on in Neapolitan churches: the image of the Virgin Mary, model for Christian life, and the portrayal of San Januarius, patron of Naples and of the Campania region, as a martyr and witness of faith.
