Chiesa di S. Maria Donnaregina Vecchia
The church of Santa Maria Donnaregina represents one of the most important medieval works of the city of Naples; a precious testimony of Gothicinfluenced architecture. The polygonal apse with very high arcades limits the central nave which presents a wooden ceiling that follows classical Franciscan imprinting. The splendid and superb Grave of Maria of Hungary, was commissioned by Roberto d’Angiò, son of Queen Maria, in order to follow her dead mother’s wishes to be buried in the temple she had deeply wanted. It is today placed on the left-hand wall of the church’s nave and was made
by the artist from Siena Tino da Camaino (who arrived in Naples in 1324. Two frescoes representing the crucifixion can be seen at the sides of the triumphal arch, maybe one is a copy of the other. Interesting is the remainder of the original pavement of the apse, made in ceramic terracotta tiles, a noteworthy example of Neapolitan ceramic art at the time, dated between the end of the XIV and the beginning of the XV century. Certainly worth mentioning are the frescoes on the walls and ceiling of the Cappella Loffredo (made up of a rectangular room covered by a ribbed cross-vault), however it is uncertain the date or the artist. Giotto and Byzantine inspired strokes can be seen in these works, like in, for example, the Crucifixion on the wall on the left or the Annunciazione placed on the front wall at the entrance.
